Social networking has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years, a technological testimony to the new generation’s “need-to-know-it-now” philosophy. But this trend is no longer only for the young and restless. Businesses and cities across the nation have decided to take advantage of the information messaging power these networks harbor.

One city in particular is Manvel, which has recently added a Twitter account within their information technology department. The 140 max character text-based updates allow the city to keep citizens and residents better informed of city news, road closings and public safety. Posting each Tweet takes mere seconds and allows people to remain constantly updated on community events.

Texas Highway 6: How do You Want it to Look?

Lakes of Savannah Community residents will have a rare opportunity to put in their own thoughts about the upcoming redesigning of Texas 6 around Manvel. Although the improvements will originate in the Manvel area, the impact of the road extends beyond and will have an impact on residents living in and around Manvel.

The city will be hosting an open house and survey this Thursday, June 11th to gather input on the new development planned for the highway. The information will be used to help create a general overlay district for the roadway, which is planned for a specific area and supersedes the existing zoning regulations.

The expansion of the roadway extends beyond the Manvel area, fronting the Lakes of Savannah community. “We’re very happy that the Manvel City government is just as concerned with the opinions and feedback from residents living in Lakes of Savannah, who use the road daily,” said Misty Watkins, Marketing Director for Lakes of Savannah.

A portion of the recent growth in the Pearland/Manvel/Alvin areas can be attributed to the flourishing of the Lakes of Savannah community. As a response to the City of Manvel's recent growth, Manvel expects to finalize a purchase of 4.64 acres of land in Old Town Manvel within the next month.

The $138,000 property is located at 6311 N. Masters Road, approved for purchase by the Manvel City Council in early 2009.

The land will be the site for a new permanent public-works facility, planned to be near a brand new City Hall and police station. Plans are to expand the current City Hall by 2,400 square feet and use it as a county library branch.

Plans to build the actual public-works facility are in the beginning stages, and there is no definite cost estimate in City Council's hands as of yet. The new facility is hoped to have space for materials, equipment, an office, and fencing to prevent theft (a current risk at the public-works facility's currently rented location).

Lakes of Savannah residents are close neighbors to Manvel, as Lakes of Savannah high school students currently attend Manvel High School, which opened in Fall of 2006. The city-community relationship is prospected to be a mutually beneficial one in years to come.
