Sam's Club to Open in Pearland

The Houston Chronicle recently reported that Sam’s Club will soon open in Pearland. The new store will be located on an 18-acre tract of land at the northeast corner of Kirby Drive and Shadow Creek Parkway.

Construction is set to begin this spring on the new 136,000 square-foot store that is planned to open in October.

Residents in Lakes of Savannah will have easy access to the new store which will be located minutes away.

Alvin ISD Fights Childhood Cancer

According to the Foundation for Children with Cancer, their mission is to financially assist the families of children with cancer. By providing tangible and direct financial support, such as mortgage payments, insurance premiums and utility bills, families are given a greater opportunity to focus on their child’s treatment and recovery.

Alvin ISD helped raise over $13,000 to assist the families of children with cancer. The students, faculty and staff participated in “Hats on Day”, which is a fundraiser that was started by four sixth graders to help their classmate and friend raise money for a bone marrow transplant. Sadly, their friend Kevin Beffa lost his battle with childhood cancer just days before his surgery. The friends continued their fundraiser as an awareness campaign about children undergoing chemotherapy and related complications.

Hats On Day has grown to be one of the most influential and profitable fund-raisers among school age children, raising over $1,000,000 in the past 10 years. For more information on Hats on Day visit the Children with Cancer website.

Alvin High School Choir presents 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'

Alvin High School is proud to present their production of the Broadway musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie". The show will run through January 21st, all shows are at 7:30pm at the Marguerite Edwards Auditorium, 802 S. Johnson St.

The story is set in 1922 New York CIty where Millie Dillmount begins a new, modern life. Millie is a fearless young lady from Kansas who took herself out of Kansas. Now she is on a quest to take Kansas out of her. She arrives in the big apple with high hopes and high hemlines.

Pearland Parks and Recreation Hosts the Dawson Winter Dash 5K & Family Fun Run

The Annual Dawson Winter Dash is held every year at Pearland Junior High South. This year’s dash will be Saturday January 28th at 9am. The run is part of Pearland’s 16th Annual Winterfest.

The fun run will begin at 8:30am and the 5K will begin at 9am. Packets can be picked up at the Pearland Parks and Recreation Center on January 27th from 2pm to 6pm in the Natatorium. Entry in the Dawson Winter Dash includes tickets to the Pearland Winterfest.

The Pearland Winterfest is a fun-filled day of playing in the snow, riding rides, eating great food and playing games with friends and family. Event features a snow tubing hill, carnival, inflatable games, exotic petting zoo, rock climbing and more!

Stay on track with this new year with Pearland Parks and Recreation Center and Natatorium. According to their website, the 107,000 square foot Recreation Center & Natatorium is a joint partnership with the Pearland Independent School District and the Pearland Economic Development Corporation.

The recreation center has a sizable gymnasium and weight room, along with an activity room, racquetball courts, locker rooms, an elevated story indoor track, and a drop-in play area for children. The natatorium has competition pool, two 3-meter diving boards, two 1-meter diving boards and a warm-up pool.

Group Fitness classes are now available at the Recreation Center & Natatorium with most fitness classes included with membership to the center. The schedule for 2012 Group Fitness is available here.

Pearland Parks & Recreation Center wishes all a happy new year. They operate the Stella Roberts Recycling Center to help Pearland stay green. The center provides a way for residents to dispose of certain waste products and be eco-friendly.

The Stella Roberts Recycling Center has a rewards program for residents that consistently and frequently recycle. Items that can be processed at the center include paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, metal cans, glass and plastic. Completed rewards punch cards can be entered into a quarterly drawing for the opportunity to win a gift certificate to the Pearland Olive Garden, 2808 Smith Ranch Road. The rewards program is sponsored by Keep Pearland Beautiful.

Inside the Pearland City Limits the center will pick up selected recyclable materials including clear & colored number 1 bottles and number 2 plastic bottles, glass, newspaper, magazines, Catalogs, telephone books, printer & copy paper, mail, aluminum Cans, steel Cans, and steel lids. Pearland Parks and Recreation Invites the Community to the Annual Winterfest

Winter time is the perfect time for festivals! Winterfest will take place January 29th from 10am to 5pm at Bailey Campus, 4717 Bailey Road. The days are generally shorter, so making the most of each day is ideal.

Pearland Parks and Recreation invites the community out for a day of fun and celebration. HEB will host a Winter Zone with 250,000 lbs of snow! There will also be a petting zoo, pony rides, ice carving demonstrations, dancing horses, carnival rides, games, inflatables, and much more! Winterfest is free for those under age two and only $10 for kids under age 16.

Pearland Library offers Crafts and Enticing Activities for Children

This holiday season, Pearland Library, 3522 Liberty Drive is offering a wide array of events for children. The season holds craft times, movie nights, and story times for the younger children.

Story time is each Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30am. Children ages 12-18 are welcome to view teen movie night. Popcorn and lemonade will be provided. Craft time will be a “grab bag” of crafting time.

Manvel High School Football Team Heads to State Championship

The Mavericks of Manvel High School are state championship bound.

The 2011 undefeated semifinal champs will head to Dallas to play Aledo for the Division II 4A State Championship this Saturday, December 17. The game begins at noon at Cowboy stadium.

Sign Up for the Houston Rockets Holiday Basketball Clinic

The Houston Rockets and the National Basketball Academy will host a three Holiday basketball clinic at the Pearland Recreation Center December 19th through the 21st.

This three day clinic is designed to improve the skills of any child interested in basketball. It’s open to children in grades 3 through 9. The children will be teamed up by age, skill, and gender if possible. Each participate will receive tickets to a future rockets game.

The Pearland Theatre Guild Receives a $5K Grant

The City of Pearland, in support of local arts groups, awarded The Pearland Theatre Guild a $5,000 reimbursement grant for their 2010- 2011 season.

“It comes at a perfect time,” said Executive Artistic Director Renee van Nifterik in a press release. “We can’t say thank you enough to the City of Pearland and the Department of Parks and Recreation for creating and administering this grant. It will have a huge impact on what we can do in our community.” The group is currently planning on revamping a warehouse into a space for the performing arts.

De-Stress and De-Clutter Your Closets

The holiday season is the perfect time to get organized, categorized, and neatly arranged. Start by cleaning out the closets, so that when cleaning up for the holidays the closets and other places where things are stored are ready, instead of cramming them in at the last minute.

Go through each closet with two baskets: stuff to donate and stuff to discard. Linen closets should have three sets of wash cloths, towels, and bed sheets per person, plus a set for guests. Once the closets are cleaned out, purchase storage bins or baskets in the same color to create storage space in the closets. Dollar stores and discount stores often have storage bins and baskets available at affordable prices. Also using the back of closet and cupboard doors adds increases storage space. These tips will create plenty of storage so that every miscellaneous item will find a home.

Maintaining organizational habits is easier when it flows naturally into every day activities. For example, if the kids come home from school every day and dump their belongings at the back door create a systematic solution at the back door. Set up a book shelf and put a storage basket with each child’s name on it. Place the the bins at the child’s eye level and use the bottom shelf for shoes.

Beautification Award Presentation at the Pearland Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast

The Keep Pearland Beautiful Beautification Committee honors a local business each month for their efforts to beautify Pearland. On December 9th at 7:30am at the Pearland Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast the Beautification Committee will present their November award.

A New HEB Grocery Store is on the Horizon for Pearland

As Pearland continues to grow, the need for more amenities such as grocery stores has risen. HEB has purchased land and will be constructing a new store on Pearland Parkway at the intersection of FM 518.

The company has not yet set a construction schedule or put a timeline in place. HEB, which has one store in Pearland at Texas 288 and FM 518, believes "the city's growth makes it a great target for another store", said Cyndy Garza, public affairs director for the company. Garza said she's not aware of any complaints by the public about the store's location or impact on traffic.

Pearland Parks and Recreation Presents Hometown Holiday Festival and Parade

The Pearland Parks and Recreation Center invites its residents to enjoy a Hometown Holiday December 2 through 4 at Pearland Town Center, located on 11200 Broadway. The city’s annual Hometown Holiday Festival will begin with a tree lighting hosted by Mayor Reid and Santa Claus who will illuminate the sky as they plug in the city's Christmas tree.

The tree lighting ceremony, which begins at 7 PM, will feature a laser light show as well as a performance by Reverend Butter, from The Learning Channel's Chainsaw Ice Sculptors. On Saturday morning, the festival will begin with breakfast with Santa, followed by a Holiday Mart. The evening will conclude with Cookies with Santa and a movie under the stars. The celebration will come to an end on Sunday with a Holiday Mart and the Reindeer Run.

Pearland Recreation Center & Natatorium is Offering Swim and Fitness Classes

Ready for fall fitness with Pearland Parks & Recreation? Get involved in their swim and fitness lessons at the Recreation center & Natatorium. The pool is a competition size pool with two 3 meter diving boards and features a warm up pool with zero depth entry. Almost all the group fitness classes are offered free of charge to members.

The Girl Scouts Ask Local Residents to Volunteer

The programs that the Girl Scouts participate in each year include sciences, technology, economics, and business related topics. The Girls Scouts of America is considered the premier organization for young girls. The organization is asking the local community of those who are over the age of 18 to volunteer.

Girl Scout volunteers have the opportunity to impact young girls to become leaders and innovators in their community. The traditional volunteer time is one year, however there are many flexible options for those on a tight schedule. Girl Scouts began in 1912 and has been raising up healthy confident young women across our nation.
